Fundamentals of Leadership

One of the key aspects that determines the success of any leader is their ability to manage their employees efficiently. An effective leader keeps their employees motivated and engaged, which results in high work efficiency and profitability for the organization. It is vital for every leader to possess good fundamental values and skills. Here are a few key fundamentals every leader must practice!

Respect your team members: “Respect is a two-way street, if you want it you have to give it” – R.G. Risch. Every individual deserves respect irrespective of their designation or role in the system. It is necessary to showcase empathy and concern for the team members. Great leaders always listen, understand and support their team and when they feel valued and respected, they work even harder.

Don’t Micro-manage: In business management, micro-management is a management style where a leader closely observes and/or controls and/or reminds the work of their teammates. Micromanaging makes employees feel disrespected and it affects productivity. A good leader should always delegate tasks and trust the team in getting the job done. This will also lead to employees taking ownership of the tasks.

Showcase empathy: There is a very fine line between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy is reacting to the situation while empathy is understanding and feeling the situation. A leader must always ask the employee if they are facing any issues or need any guidance to complete the work given to them. This will help in earning a lot of respect and build a long-term relationship.

Prioritize: A leader must prioritize tasks, spend time and efforts wisely. It is important to differentiate between urgency and importance. If a task is not urgent, note it down in your schedule and utilize your time on what’s urgent and the need of the hour. Delegate those tasks which need immediate attention and help the team to arrive at a closure.

Summary:

  • You need to respect your employees in order to get them to respect you.
  • Don’t micromanage everything, delegate the tasks and let your team showcase great results.
  • Understand your employees in order to manage them better.
  • Prioritize tasks in order to effectively get things done.
